Confessed child molester facing at least 15 years
In a Columbus courtroom last week, a man confessed to sexually assaulting a 6-year-old girl and physically assaulting a second young girl.
And for those crimes, he has entered into a plea agreement in which prosecutors will recommend one of the harshest sentences to be sought in Stillwater County in years -- 100 years in the Montana State Prison with 75 years suspended and no parole for the first 15 years.
Adam Cody Ferguson, 26, pleaded guilty to one felony count of sexual assault and one felony count of assault on a minor, answering “Guilty, your honor” when asked how he pleaded to each charge.
Because the victim of the sexual assault is more than four years younger then Ferguson, a minimum mandatory sentence of four years applies.
The assaults occurred in 2011 and 2012. The physical assault involved Ferguson hitting the victim repeatedly, causing significant bruising, according to information presented at last Friday’s hearing.
Sentencing is set for March. Ferguson remains in the Yellowstone County Detention Facility where he has been since his arrest. Bail is set at $50,000.
As part of the plea agreement, charges were amended from three felony counts of sexual assault to one felony count of sexual assault and one felony count of assault on a minor.
