Cougars start out 1-1
The Cougars kept it close at their first conference volleyball game, a home match-up against the Shepherd Mustangs on Thursday, Sept. 1. But Columbus came up short, losing in three sets, 25-23, 25-22, 25-21.
“We played fairly well, but they would get on a roll and we had a hard time stopping them,” Columbus head coach Becky Kurtz said.
Shepherd hammered Columbus with 34 kills to 15, but the Cougars still managed to hang in their with the Mustangs. Sophomore Morgan Kirch had six of the home team’s kills.
The Mustangs also led the Cougars in defense, with 54 digs to 32 and 33 assists to 10. Junior Kat Sindelar had eight assists, and junior Uluwehi Brooks had 11 digs.
The teams were closer in aces and blocks – Brooks had four aces, and junior Maddi Carman had three blocks.
The Cougars bounced back against the Big Timber Herders with nail-biter that went to five sets at home on Saturday, Sept. 3. Columbus emerged victorious after losing the second and third sets, 25-17, 16-25, 9-25, 25-22, 15-10.
“We played hard this entire game,” Kurtz said. “We had a hard time recovering from small mistakes in the sets that we lost, but the girls hung in there and rallied back to win the hard way.”
Next up is a match at home against the Joliet J-Hawks on Thursday, Sept. 8, a match in Roundup against the Panthers on Saturday, Sept. 10, and a match in Big Timber against the Herders on Tuesday, Sept. 13.
