Clarification provided on use of Gladney name
My husband, Dan Gladney, was a private person, and I would have preferred to not make a public statement on our family’s behalf, but in light of the fundraising effort for Relay For Life that included his name, I feel strongly there is need for clarification.
I was not included in or even informed of the creation of Team Gladney (which is also called Team Dot/Dan). As a matter of fact, my sons and I were caught quite off-guard when we first spotted one of the donation canisters, and it took me several weeks to track down information regarding who had organized the fundraiser. I believe Relay For Life is a strong aspect of The American Cancer Society. I also recognize that this may have been done in Dan’s name out of kindness.
However, Dan’s sons and I are the Gladney “team” now, and this has been a painful situation to handle without him here to speak for himself. I have fielded questions about if the funds were going into our boys’ college funds. I can absolutely respond to the other question: No part of the monies raised for Relay For Life- Team Gladney, Team Dot/Dan- goes to my family.
Before his death last June, Dan made the decision that any memorials be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital and he set up a college fund for his sons at Yellowstone Bank here in Columbus. I make no apologies for any confusion with this recent fundraiser as we have had no part in it, but I do hope that this letter will lessen any concerns.
*Editor’s Note: Team Dot/Dan is comprised of a group of IGA employees who named the team in memory of Abney, whose mother is on the team, and the late wife of another team member.
