June 1, 1944 – July 27, 2016

Shirley Gail Gates, 72, of Columbus, passed away on July 27, 2016.
She was born to Clarence and Vivian Kjelgren in Kelvington, Saskatchewan on June 1, 1944.
After her schooling, she worked as a front desk clerk at a hotel in Fort St. John, British Columbia where she met her husband of 44 years, Harry Gates. They were married in Fort St. John and later settled in Columbus, Mont., where they raised their two children, Kelly and Harry Dale.
Shirley became a United States citizen in 1975. She worked as a CNA at Stillwater Community Hospital for many years. She had many hobbies throughout her life but she was known for her crocheting and knitting skills. Her beautiful and heartfelt creations are the pride of many.
Shirley loved her family and her friends. If you knew her, you loved her. You could always count on a cup of coffee and a homemade dessert, if you stopped by for a visit. She was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt and friend who will be dearly missed.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Harry; her father, Clarence; her mother, Vivian; her sister, Charlene Hubley and her great grandson Gage Gabriel Gates.
She leaves to mourn, her daugther, Kelly Gates from Butte, Mont.; her son, Harry Gates (Marci) from Columbus, Mont.; her brother, Cliff Kjelgren (Donna) from Cadillac, Saskatchewan; her brother, Dale Kjelgren (Patty) from Cadillac, Saskatchewan; her brother Bert Kjelgren (Heather) from Lac La Hache, British Columbia; her sister, Sharon Swanberg (Dale) from Kelowna, British Columbia; grandchildren, Elizabeth, Casey (Misty), Stacey and Ethan; great grandchildren, Abbey and Megan and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the Davey Family, Jack Wagner, Carl, Judy and Kathy Gates, Pat and Gary Lofing, Sandy Gasser and all of her friends who went out of their way to make things a little easier for Shirley in her last years.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 13, at Columbus Evangelical Church in Columbus, Mont.
