Ruth R. Newman, of Columbus, Mont., passed away peacefully on Feb. 11, 2017, with her family at her side.
She was born March 27, 1930, in Sidney, Mont., the daughter of James and Berniece (Sparks) Cundiff.
Ruth attended elementary school at the one room Girard Community School in Sidney, Mont., and graduated from Sidney High School in 1948.
She married the love of her life, Arnold Newman, on Nov. 7, 1948. Arnold and Ruth lived in Sidney until 1953. They moved to Columbus, Mont., to begin their gas and oil business and raise their family of six children. They owned and managed the downtown business until 1987, then retired to the Shane Creek Ranch.
Arnold and Ruth enjoyed over 20 years of traveling and spending winters in Arizona, where they met and enjoyed many “Snowbird Friends.”
Ruth will always be remembered for her exceptional and award winning quilting. Her beautiful artistic quilts are a treasure to family and friends: “A great reminder of her Love and Kindness.” Ruth shared her lifelong love of gardening with family and friends through beautiful bouquets and fresh veggies. The Gurney’s Catalog was always an eagerly awaited arrival!
All who met Ruth will remember her ready smile and kind words. She was always a wonderful role model for her entire family.
Ruth is survived by her six children: Wanda Flanagan, Bev (Bob) Plagmann, David (Bev) Newman, Carol Gordon, Arden (Barb) Newman and Linda Oltrogge. She is Grandma to Beth, Shannon, Steven, Brice, Lexi, Brad, Ryan, Sarah and Brian; Great Grandma to Gunnar, Greta, Grier, Gannon, Darren, Derek, Danielle, Emma, Owen, Amelia, Chael, Claire, Hadley, Eliza, Henry, Jacob, Wyatt and Xander.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold, as well as her parents, brother Bill and sisters Cora and Helen.
Memorials may be made to Project Hope, Columbus Senior Center, or charity of your choice.
Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017, at Columbus Community Congregational Church. Inurnment will be in the Mountain View Cemetery in Columbus, Mont.
