Cougar boys down Red Lodge and Shepherd

The Columbus Cougar boys’ basketball squad posted double weekend wins.
The Cougars opened with a 20-point win against the Red Lodge Rams Friday night, 29-49. Jace Aumueller led both teams in scoring with 16 points while teammates Rily Livingston and Brandon Horton with 8 apiece.
On Saturday, the Cougars faced Shepherd, which proved to be a much closer fight but still went to CHS 40-35.
Livingston led all scorers with 15 with Horton and Mario Sabo each adding 7.
The girls started weekend play with a painfully close loss to Red Lodge — 54-52.
Morgan Kirch led the Cougars in scoring with 17 points followed by Uluwehi Brooks with 14.
Saturday night was even more painful, but for a different reason, with Cougars falling to Shepherd 27-41. Kirch again led the team in scoring with 8 points and seven rebounds, followed by Maddi Carman and Megan Rouane who each had 5.
“We had a tough weekend, especially offensively. When you’re trying to learn how to win games you lose a lot more than you win and you certainly can expect some ups and down as the season goes on,” said Coach Jeromey Burke.
In Red Lodge, Burke said his squad emerged from halftime like a different team.
“We were a completely different team when we came out of halftime and that is 100 percent a credit to the girls. I didn’t make a lot of changes at halftime, they just changed their approach and came out more aggressive,” said Burke.
He noted Uluwehi Brooks was a huge spark whose shooting kept the Cougars in the game throughout the night.
