Cougars wrap up season, go to tournament as No. 1 seed

4B tourney begins Thursday in Columbus

The Columbus Cougar boys and girls wrapped up their regular seasons this weekend and begin postseason play in the District 4B tournament beginning Thursday at the Columbus High School.
The two teams are going in very different directions. The boys, with an overall record of 13-5 and 9-1 in 4B, picked up weekend wins over Red Lodge (52-28) and Three Forks (50-36) and enter the tournament as the No.1 seed. Columbus receives a first-round bye and will play on Friday night against the winner of Thursday’s game between Joliet (9-9) and Roundup (10-8).
The Columbus girls (3-15, 2-8) are still looking for a little momentum in a season where momentum has been scarce. The girls are in the midst of an 11-game losing streak which continued last weekend with losses to Red Lodge (61-41) and Three Forks (65-42).
The girls enter the tournament as the No. 5 seed and will face Joliet (5-13) on Thursday. Columbus defeated Joliet 50-42 to open the season, then lost 55-52 to the J-Hawks two weeks ago in a game the Cougars led by 10 with four minutes remaining.
The 4B tournament runs through Saturday. The tournament eliminates three of the six 4B teams, with the survivors moving on to the Southern B divisional tournament in Billings on March 3-5.
