Alex DeVilbiss named CFR Firefighter of the Year

After a 2-year absence due to the COVID pandemic, Columbus Fire Rescue held its annual Fireman’s Appreciation Dinner earlier this month.

In addition to recognizing multiple volunteers for years of service, Alex DeVilbiss was named Firefighter of the Year and Chief’s Choice Award. Making that award even more impressive is the fact that DeVilbiss is a rookie.

Firefighter of the Year is decided by a vote of all firefighters. The Chief’s Choice is awarded by Columbus Fire Chief Rich Cowger, who explained he looks for someone who stands out.

“He (DeVilbiss)is fairly new, but he eats it up,” said Cowger. “When you need help, he is one of the first ones to be there, and just wants to learn more. And he gets along and interacts with everyone, of every age group. He can hang out with the kids as well as the older group, he doesn’t care.”

Also receiving awards at the dinner were the following: •Response Award: Todd Metzler, who had 62 responses (5.94 percent of calls for service) for 2021.

•Most Training Award: Dan Otis logged 88 training hours for 2021.

•Most On-Call Hours: Thomas Robbins had 582.25 hours on call for 2021.

Additionally, Ryan Heminger and Kyle Starr were each promoted to the rank of captain.
