James Bates

James Edward Bates III, 76, of Fishtail, Mont., died March 26, 2019, at his Billings, Mont., home.

He was born Feb. 17, 1943, in Los Angeles, Calif., to James and Thelma (Whipple) Bates. He graduated from the University of Southern California and went on to law school after discharge from the U.S. Army. He married Deborah DePietro on Feb. 4, 1981.

Jim spent his childhood summers at the family ranch in Fishtail and continued commuting between Los Angeles and Fishtail until 1994, when he convinced his wife to move to Montana. Jim loved the ranch, gardening and operating his tractor. He spent most of his time on the ranch until illness kept him in Billings during the week.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife; his daughters, Loree Bates (Brent Meinhardt) of Simi Valley, Calif., and Blaire DePietro Bates of Arvada, Colo.; his sister, Beverly Hall; nephew, James Kent Hall of Portland, Ore.; his aunt, Sherry (Whipple) Edwards and the Minto Family cousins.

A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on Sunday, June 9, 1 p.m., at Bates Ranch in Fishtail.
