A claim made by a Stillwater County commissioner candidate during an online forum is being refuted by multiple county department heads.

In an online candidates’ forum hosted by the Stillwater Central Republican Committee last Friday night, a question was asked by the News regarding if any of the candidates had actually looked at the county budget to see where money was being spent and where it was being saved.

Candidate Curt Robbins said that he had looked at it in general terms and added the following:

“But I do think it’s important to hold the department heads accountable. And I’ve talked to a lot of those department heads and they are trying very, very hard to stay within their budgets. I think it’s important that if we set a budget, that you stick to it…. the department heads are quite aware of it and from what they’ve told me, they are trying very hard to keep their costs down. As a commission, I think we need to hold their feet to the fire on that.”

At least 10 department heads have since told the News that they have never had a conversation with Robbins about their budgets. Three additional department heads said they have had correspondance with Robbins, but it was not about their specific budget. Three department heads had not returned messages to the News by presstime regarding the matter.
