As far as opening games go, Columbus High School Football Coach Blake Hoge thinks that last weekend’s 1-point loss to Red Lodge went well.

“We made a ton of mistakes, but that’s too be expected in our first go especially starting some younger guys at key spots. I’m pleased with our effort and grit. Our guys might not have been in the right spots all the time, but they gave good effort,” said Hoge this week. “We also kept fighting until the very last play. Being down most of the game, we showed a ton of heart down the stretch which is a testament to our captains and other senior leaders.”

Hoge noted the performance of sophomore quarterback Caden Meier, who had never played in a varsity game and been out all of last season due to an early season injury.

“He showed a lot of poise and almost led us to a comeback victory in his very first start,” said Hoge.

Meier was also playing against his uncle, who was coaching the Red Lodge Rams.

Meier ended the night with 214 passing yards with three touchdowns and one interception. Senior Trey Stampfel led the receivers with 64 yards on five catches, including a touchdown. Sophomore Colby Martinez added two touchdowns as well.

Defensively, the Cougars allowed almost 300 yards rushing — something Hoge said will have to be worked on if the team has any chance of making the playoffs.

Defensively, the Cougars were led by senior Tommy Campbell with 9.5 total tackles, including two for loss. Seniors Keegan Goddard and Izaak Huncovsky had 7.4 and 5.5, tackles respectively, along with one TFL each.

The Cougars open conference play at 7 p.m. in Boulder this Friday, Sept. 13.
