Dennis William Gauthier passed away Sept. 17, 2021, after battling assorted health issues. He was a loving husband, son, amazing father to his daughters, wonderful grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend to many.

He was born Dec. 5, 1957, in Columbus, Mont., to William and the late Patricia (Wetter) Gauthier. He was the oldest son but the second born of nine.

Dennis was raised on the family farm, with the infamous big red barn, outside of Absarokee, Mont., on the Stillwater River. Dennis enjoyed the farm life, which resulted in building skills he’d keep for a lifetime and creating many memories with his siblings.

After graduating from Absarokee High School in 1976, Dennis began working for Beall Trailers, eventually acquired by MAC LTT, where he remained as a loyal employee for 45 years. Those who worked with him have said he was one of the hardest, most dedicated workers and was always willing to help others and pass on his vast knowledge regarding welding and other production skills.

After sharing their first date on Dec. 31, 1976, Merridy and Dennis became inseparable. On June 23, 1979, they were married at St. James Lutheran Church in Columbus, Mont. As a couple they shared evenings of card nights, boating, fishing, camping and traveling. They looked forward to starting a family together.

Their prayers were answered three-fold with their daughters Crystal, Jennifer, and Heather. Dennis was an amazing father and a true family man. He instilled in his daughters the importance of working hard and what it meant to be country kids. He spoiled them with unconditional love in all things: sewing Halloween costumes, building snowmen, and continuing with fishing, hunting, boating, and camping trips. He was involved in all their activities from coaching little league and soccer to being the Girl Scout Dad. He never missed an extra-curricular event whether it be a game, concert, performance, or club activity.

Dennis loved the community in which he lived. He showed this through genuine compassion and enjoyed helping and teaching others. He spent time helping various neighbors and community members, was extremely involved in his church, helped the schools in the evenings, and donated his fabricated metal works, most notably his famous metal sunflowers. He always made himself available to anyone who was in need.

His absence has left emptiness in the lives of those he touched, especially within his family. His kindness and generosity, patience, support and encouragement, incredible “dad” humor, and fierce love will be forever missed.

Dennis is survived by his wife Merridy (Pond) Gauthier; his three daughters Crystal (Levi) Weltikol, Jennifer (Aaron) Brann and Heather Gauthier. He is also survived by his father William Gauthier and siblings Noreen (Joe) Anderson, Angela (Les) Kissler, Brian (Teresa) Gauthier, Ted Gauthier, Mark (Heidi) Gauthier, Tom Gauthier, Kenneth (Terri) Gauthier, numerous nephews and nieces, and a magnitude of extended family. He was also the proud grandfather of Lydia Weltikol and Vivian Brann.

He was preceded in death by his mother Patricia (Wetter) Gauthier and his brother Philip Gauthier.

Smith Funeral Chapels of Laurel, Mont., is assisting the family. Services will be held at the Columbus High School Gym on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2021, at 12 p.m. with a reception to follow.
