Ellis E. Ecret III, 73 of Nye, Mont., passed away at home surrounded by his children, grandchildren and dog on Jan. 2, 2021.

Ellis had been in declining health for several years due to chronic illnesses.

Ellis was born in Bridgeton, New Jersey, the oldest of six kids, to Ellis E. (Bo) Ecret Jr and Lillian Tarpine Ecret. His childhood summers were spent working on his Grand father’s Christmas Tree Farm in Fort Mont, New Jersey, which he had fond memories of and spoke of often.

In 1964, he married Joanne Jess. Soon a daughter and son were born over the next few years. Ellis worked as a truck driver in the early years of his marriage and while his kids were small, he took a job with E. I. DuPont Chambers Works Chemicals, where he remained until 1989.

In the ‘70s, he built a Vermont Log Home for the family that he was very proud of. The home remains beautiful and strong to this day. In addition to his “regular” jobs, he successfully ran an archery and horseback lesson/trail riding business.

He was always busy with a headstrong work ethic admired by many. He helped organize and successfully run fundraisers for cancer patients using his horse and archery businesses, which he was very proud of.

He was blessed to spend many years hunting the Adirondack Mountains at the family cabin with lifelong friends near Schroon Lake in northeast New York. His hunting ultimately brought him to Montana in the ‘80s and he soon talked the entire family into moving to Montana, realizing his Montana dream in 1989.

He worked a short time for KEM Ready Mix and Stillwater Mining Company. Ultimately he returned to the trucking industry as an owner-operator partnership with his son in E&S Trucking until he retired in 2012.

After retiring, he helped his wife with her family business Stillwater Cinch Company. He was the #1 supply fetcher and all around gofer! He cared for his ailing wife prior to her death in 2018. They had been married 54 years when she passed away and he truly never recovered from the loss. He spoke of her daily and is now at peace with her again.

He was a believer in family traditions, a true patriot and family first. He spoke often with his children and grandchildren about politics as well as standing strong in your beliefs.

He instilled the need to keep up the family traditions of Christmas, flying the American Flag and to never take crap from anyone!

He was an avid John Wayne fan and in his last days enjoyed rewatching John Wayne, Lonesome Dove and other Westerns with his two kids. He always said he was born 100 years too late! He lived his life according to his rules and dreams with no need for regrets.

Ellis is survived by his daughter, Justine (Greg); his son, Scott (Johnnie) and grandchildren Christopher Ecret, Jessica Ecret, William Ecret and Nila Dawson. He is also survived by siblings Ronna Lee Ecret Link, Garry Ecret and Terry Ecret.

Ellis was preceded in death by his wife Joanne, his father Ellis E. (Bo) Ecret Jr, his mother Lillian Tarpine Ecret, his siblings, Stanley Ecret and Howard Ecret, and his granddaughter, Nina Lynn Dawson.

A private service will take place in the summer per his wishes. Final arrangements have been handled by Michelotti Sawyers, Billings, Mont.
