Nicholas Steven Gaines, age 35, passed away on Feb. 4, 2021 at 4:45 a.m. at Billings Clinic Hospital.

Nicholas was born in Columbus, Mont., to parents Steven and Crystal Gaines and older sister Amber on May 5, 1985. He grew up in Stillwater County and went to Columbus High School, graduating in 2003. After high school Nick joined the United States Navy.

Nick proudly served his country in the Navy from 2006 to 2014. In that time, he received awards and completed several tours overseas. A few of the mentioned awards are two Navy/Marine Corp achievement Medals, three Navy/Marine Corps overseas service ribbons. He was honorably discharged as a BM2 (Boatswains mate petty officer 2nd class).

Nick is survived by parents, Steven and Crystal Gaines; sister Amber (Robin) Blumberg; aunts and uncles Sandra (Terry) Soine, Aloma (Sondra) Jess, Scott (Gloria) Jess and grandmother Katherine (Randy Wegner) Jess. Nick is also survived by five children, Taylar Gaines, Maya Gaines, and Bentley Gaines from previous wife Natasha Gaines and Joshua Reynoso Gaines and Elijah Gaines with his current wife, Roxanna Gaines, who is active Navy.

Nick was a strong man with a kind heart and bravely fought his illness to the end. He blazed a trail in this world unencumbered and unafraid to be exactly who he was. His mischievous smile was a bright light in this world. We will miss his light.

Funeral services will be held at Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel, Mont. Burial followed in the Yellowstone National Cemetery, Laurel, Mont.
