Absarokee High School students are learning the process of painting a mural. The focus is on public art for the community to enjoy and as a community service project. The artwork theme is based on outdoor recreation. In this case, a fly fishing and rafting scene with brown trout rising to a summer evening caddis hatch. “I designed the artwork and act as ‘art director’,” said Absarokee art teacher Mr. Mullen. Students paint most of the design and Mullen shows them his gridded pattern design that is transferred onto the wall with oil pastels. The students use the shapes that Mullen has drawn as the color boundaries.

The paint and supplies are paid with the Braly Foundation grant that was awarded last year to the art department. Mullen wrote an art project proposal for the grant for this specifically. Photos by Shari DeSaveur
