The 2017-2018 Absarokee Senior High School Lady Husky basketball team.

The Absarokee Huskies went to work last weekend in Miles City as they took on a tough field of competitors at the Southern C Divisional basketball tournament.

Tournament play opened Thursday afternoon with the Huskies facing the Wibaux Longhorns, the first seed from the 4C district.

The game started out slow, with neither team on the scoreboard for the first two minutes. About halfway through the first quarter, the Wibaux offense found a rhythm; Absarokee was plagued with turnovers and could not answer. At the end of the first, the Huskies were down nine points, 11-2.

Absarokee came out well to start the second period, going on a 7-2 run to close the gap between the two teams to four points. After the first couple minutes, though, the Husky offense cooled while the Longhorn offense took advantage of Absarokee mistakes and steadily added points. Going into halftime, Wibaux stretched the lead to 26-9.

The Huskies found a spark to begin the second half, putting up six quick points. After several minutes, again, the Longhorns took control of the game, and this time they held it for good. The Huskies never found a rhythm and lost the game with a 60-24 final.

Junior Mallorey Sheppard led the Absarokee offensive efforts with 10 points. Senior Rebecka Lester, junior Makensi McCally, and freshman Lexi Feddes each contributed four points.

The first-round loss sent the Huskies to a loser-out game Friday afternoon against the Terry Terriers.

Early in the game the Absarokee offense found the spark that was missing on Thursday. The Huskies scored four quick points and held the Terriers scoreless for almost two and a half minutes. Terry tied the game at the halfway point of the first quarter, but after that Absarokee took control, going on a 7-0 run for the 11-4 lead at the end of the period. The Huskies maintained the lead throughout the second, and entered halftime up, 19-12.

The Terriers fought back, cutting the Absarokee lead to four points at the beginning of the half. The Husky offense continued to work, though, and behind a 12-point third quarter by Sheppard, Absarokee went into the fourth quarter up 10 points.

In the final minutes of the game, the Huskies caught fire. To compliment a 16-5 offensive run, Absarokee played very tough defense, holding Terry scoreless until the final two minutes of the game. Absarokee cruised to a 51-30 victory.

Sheppard led the team for the second day in a row, putting up 21 points, including four three-pointers. McCally scored 14 points, and Feddes added nine.

Two players narrowly missed double-double performances. With 11 rebounds, Feddes was one point short. Sheppard had eight rebounds in addition to her 21 points.

The win on Friday set up a 6C rematch as the Huskies faced the Bridger Scouts Saturday morning.

After the first quarter of play, Bridger had the 8-4 lead. Absarokee kept the game close, and going into halftime, the Huskies were down five points, 15-10.

The Scout offense continued to perform in the second half, and Absarokee failed to find the spark needed to answer Bridger. In the end, the Huskies fell, 40-17

Lester led the team in her final game as a Husky with six points, and Sheppard scored four.

The loss brings Absarokee’s season to a close. The Huskies finished the season with a 13-12 overall record.
