Sharon Lee Marten

Sharon Lee Marten came into the world on April 30, 1945. She was born to Kathryn and Thomas Stark and joined her big sister Kathleen.

She spent her early years in Billings and on the family farm at Sarpy Creek. Sharon referred to it as “her magical childhood,” riding horses, sledding and getting in trouble smoking cigarettes, because she lit them with firecrackers!

“Sherri,” as she was known by her family, graduated from Billings Senior High School in 1962. She then headed to the University of Montana, where she graduated with degrees in library science and Spanish. She was a member of Delta Gamma. After graduation, she married fellow UM alumna, Walter J. Marten on Nov. 25, 1967. They had recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Sharon and Walter travelled and lived in California, Arizona and Glacier Park, before finally settling in Columbus, Mont. She was a social worker at Stillwater Convalescent Center for 18 years, retiring in 1998.

Sharon and Walt had two children, Brandy Michelle and Brett Jared. Unfortunately, Brett passed away on July 17, 1997. Instead of shutting down, Sharon became heavily involved in the Compassionate Friends. She was very active in TCF and met many great friends. All the people there helped her through many dark hours of grief and suffering.

On July 7, 2005, Sharon helped welcome her only grandchild, Brett Patrick, into the world. She and Walt were elated to become grandparents. They spent many years guiding Brett into the person he is today. “Magan,” as Brett called her, doted on her grandson.

Sharon was a very active person. She referred to herself as a “Busy Body” volunteering, or helping out with Compassionate Friends. Sharon and Walt were also very involved with the Atonement Lutheran Church and loved their church family.

In the 1980s, Sharon and Walt enjoyed their time rendezvousing with the Rocky Mountain Fur Company. She loved to cook, read and travel. They recently bought a new camper and spent two months in Arizona, snow birding, but she became homesick for Montana and her grandson; she knew she needed to come back home.

Sharon Lee passed on July 3 of heart failure. We will miss her but have the solace that she is rejoicing in Heaven with Big Brett and many other loved ones.

Sharon is survived by her husband Walter J. Marten, daughter Brandy Marten Hunt, grandson Brett Patrick Hunt and cockapoo Sassy. Her (sisters) Kathy Byrne, Barb Leidel, Erin Koepp, Arlene Priest and Connie Weiler and all of her Delta Gamma girls, plus many extended relatives and friends.

Services were held on July 17, at the Atonement Lutheran Church.

Memorials may be made to Atonement Lutheran Church, 1290 Sierra Granda Blvd., Billings, Montana 59105 or to Brett Marten Yearly scholarship in c/o Walter Marten 1342 Cortez Ave Billings, Montana 59105

Thank you to Pastor Darrin Paulson for all your love, guidance and support. And the heart failure team at Billings Clinic.

We love you Magan and we’ll see you again someday.
