Oct. 18, 1936 – Sept. 22, 2018

George M. McArthur was born on Oct. 18, 1936, in Great Falls, Mont., the oldest of five children born to Sidney and Margaret McArthur. George passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 22.

George graduated from Billings Senior and graduated from Rocky Mountain College with a BS in civil engineering. In 1970, George returned to school to earn a MS degree in civil engineering from MSU. During his masters thesis work, George served a significant role in remediation studies of Silverbow Creek near Deer Lodge.

George married Susan Hamilton and had a daughter, Carrie Lynn.

George moved to Syracuse, N.Y., where he continued to hone his engineering skills. There he met and married Caroline McFadden and had four children, Rachel, Andy, Matt, and Jim. The family moved to Anaconda, Mont., where George worked for The Anaconda Company and served a pivotal role as an environmental adviser to the mining company. The family later moved to Tooele, Utah, where George remained employed with the company. Eventually, the family moved to North Carolina where George did civil design work for the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro, N.C.

George divorced and moved back to Columbus, Mont., where he retired and married Mary Schimmele. Most recently, he resided in Meadowlark Assisted Living in Columbus for several years, occasionally visiting with close friends Orty Bourquin and Don Mason. George liked to study geology, fish, spend time outdoors, and was an avid reader.

George was preceded in death by his parents Sidney and Margaret McArthur, his sister Margaret McArthur, and his dear nephew Rob McArthur. He is survived by his children Carrie Lynn (Clarence) Weatherwax, Rachel (Christopher) Rees, Andy (Mary) McArthur, Matt (Holly) McArthur, and Jim (Karen) McArthur and 10 beautiful grandchildren; brother Terry (Wayne) McArthur; sisters Marjorie McArthur and Karen (Bernie) McArthur Grosser.

There will be a private family memorial service held at a later date.
