Retha Merritt

Retha was born Jan. 30, 1929, in south east Kansas to Vernie and Maude (Wagner) Pearson, the youngest of six children. In Sept. 1947, she married Joe Montgomery. Then in December 1948, a son, Dale, joined them. They later divorced.

After moving to Michigan to be near several siblings, she met a young man named John Merritt, whom had recently left the U.S. Navy as a Petty Officer, 2nd Class. They fell deeply in love and were married Oct. 24, 1953. They had one child, Lawrence A. (Larry) Merritt.

Retha enjoyed sales work and sold a variety of products ranging from Avon to real estate, was in management with several companies, receiving both awards and trips.

She continued her education through the years and retired from a large aerospace company as an engineering data analyst.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, son Dale Montgomery and husband John in 2007 after 54 years together.

Survivors are son, Larry A. Merritt; granddaughter Theresa Merritt (Brad) Frey and grandson Tim Merritt; 4 great grandchildren, Tytus, Gavin and Emma Merritt and Dakota McNeill and greatgreat grandson Kingston Merritt.

Her requests were there be no services and to be cremated with her ashes mixed with John’s and scattered together.
