Nettie Kate Atwood of Absarokee, Mont., age 93, passed away on Jan. 11, 2020, in Laurel.

She is survived by two brothers, Joe and Vannie Toney, both residing in Arkansas; her son Earl (Diana) Atwood in Fishtail, Mont, as well as three grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

Nettie was preceded in death by her husband, Melvin Atwood, her son Donald Lee Atwood, and her brothers Billy, DH, and James Toney.

Nettie was born and raised in Peacock, a farming community in the Texas Panhandle. During World War II she met and married Melvin D. Atwood, who was serving in the United States. Army.

As a young couple they lived in Oregon for a time, then relocated to Arkansas and subsequently to Wyoming. Mel and Nettie settled in Kaycee where they had a welding and hardware business. There they raised their two sons, Donald Lee and Earl, before moving to Sheridan, Wyo., in 1969.

While in Sheridan, Nettie operated a commercial hydroponic greenhouse for several years. In 1998, they returned to Arkansas, to live on the same place where they had lived as a young couple. After Melvin’s death in 2005, Nettie moved to Absarokee, Mont., to live near her son, Earl.

Nettie had a beautiful southern soul and a warm smile. She loved Jesus, and was a devoted wife and mother. During her life she had several occupations which included homemaker, beautician, small business owner, seamstress, and commercial grower. But she was most happy when she was with her family and tending to her plants.

Memorial services for Nettie will be conducted at the Absarokee Evangelical Church on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2020, at 11 a.m. Nettie will be laid to rest with her beloved husband, Mel, in Kaycee, Wyoming.

No flowers, please. Memorials may be made in Nettie’s honor to the Absarokee Volunteer Fire Department.
