The Stillwater Renegades took advantage of a sunny day on Tuesday to open the 2019 softball season the right way, beating the Billings Central Rams 16-5.

The first four players in the Still-water lineup were able to get on base in the opening inning, but none were able to reach home. It was the second inning in which the Renegade bats got hot – Stillwater scored 10 runs in the top, and in the bottom the defense got down to business, going three-up, three-down.

In the third, the Rams outscored the Renegades 4-1, but the damage had already been done. After a scoreless fourth inning, each team added one run in the fifth. Stillwater ended the game on a high note, scoring four runs to seal the victory early after the sixth inning.

Junior Haley Story had a solid game for the Renegades, with three hits, including a double, over four at bats. She scored three runs and batted in one run. Story also pitched all six innings for Stillwater. She struck out five (3 looking, 2 swinging) and walked four.

Three more Renegades hit doubles against Central: senior Kailee Kienitz, sophomore Reed Johnson, and sophomore Makayla Harper. Senior Talyn Richard hit a 3-RBI single, and Harper’s double drove in two runs.

In all, Stillwater recorded nine hits on Tuesday compared to Central’s six hits. The Renegades committed no errors, while the Rams racked up six errors.

Base running also played an important role in Stillwater’s win. As a team, the Renegades stole nine bases, with senior Holly Pennington leading with three stolen bases. Story and Harper each stole a pair, and Richard and senior Kasidy Robbins both recorded one stolen base.

In the next week, the Renegades have two games scheduled, but the anticipated poor weather may alter the team’s plans.

Thursday, March 28, Stillwater is scheduled to play the Billings Sky-view JV team at 5 p.m.

Next Tuesday, the Renegades have their first home game scheduled against the Billings West JV team at 5 p.m.
