This stunning photo taken by Columbus Firefighter Derrick Gaedoke at 3 a.m. on June 16 shows firefighter Colton Cowger providing structure protection on the east side of the Robertson Draw Fire burning in Carbon County, just outside of Red Lodge. Cowger is on one of two engines that Columbus Fire Rescue has had onsite since June 15 and says he has been stationed around the Meeteetse Trail, where the fire “blew out of the mountains” and into the foothills. “We are still working structure protection, but we were moved to the west side off of Highway 212,” Cowger told the News from the mountain on Wednedsay morning. As of Wednesday, June 23, the fire had burned 29.601 acres and was at 53 percent containment, according to Inciweb. There were 382 fire personnel on scene from multiple local, state and federal agencies. Continued hot, dry conditions are elevating fire officials concerns and preparedness in the region. The Stillwater County Commissioners are holding an emergency meeting today, Thursday, June 24, to consider entering Stage 2 fire restrictions.
