Agnes Schaff of Fishtail passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, June 14, in Absarokee.

Agnes was 97 years old, having been born on April 28, 1921, to Henry and Evelyn Gauthier in Frenchtown, Mont. She spent her early years on a ranch at the mouth of the Musselshell River near Mechaha, Mont. When the family ranch became part of the Fort Peck Dam in 1936, the family moved to Absarokee in 1938 where Agnes attended Absarokee High School.

Agnes married Jake Schaff on Aug. 24, 1940, who preceded her in death in 1991. Jake and Agnes spent the early years of their marriage on various ranches in Clyde Park, Absarokee, and the Joliet/Edgar area before moving back to the Absarokee/ Fishtail area in 1951, where they resided the remainder of their lives.

As a farmer’s wife, Agnes raised seven children while sewing, cooking, and gardening. She was also a devoted member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church, St. Michael’s Rosary Society, the Fishtail Homemakers, and the Absarokee Quilters. Agnes will always be remembered for her delicious cinnamon rolls.

Agnes is survived by three sons, Walter of Fair Oaks, Calif., Tim of Fishtail, and Gary of Billings; three daughters, Theresa Rodeghiero of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Beverly Fryer of Melstone, and Joan Allen of Billings and a daughter-in-law, Barbara Schaff of Bozeman. She is also survived by 18 grandchildren, one step-grandson, 25 great- grandchildren, four step-great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, a brother, William Gauthier of Absarokee, a sister-in-law, Sally Fredenburg of Billings, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Agnes was preceded in death by her parents, son Bernard, an infant daughter Genevieve; daughter-in-law, Sue; step-granddaughter, Kristen Prescott; brothers Louis, James, Lawrence, Fred, Richard, and Raymond; and sisters Alice Brown and Rita Gauthier.

A wake/rosary service will be held Tuesday, June 26, at 6:30 p.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Absarokee, followed by Funeral Mass on Wednesday, June 27 at 10:30 a.m.

Memorials may be directed to St. Michael’s Grotto, P.O. Box 956, Columbus, MT 59019 or the Museum of the Beartooths (for the Dean Community Center Renovation), P.O. Box 1, Columbus, MT 59019. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Smith Funeral Chapel in Laurel.

The family of Agnes Schaff would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Tess Shipp and all the caretakers at Shipp’s Meadow Valley (Assisted Living) Home in Absarokee for the loving care provided to our mother. You treated her with care and dignity, making her last few months a rewarding time for her. We also greatly appreciated the kindness each of you extended to us whenever we visited our Mother, especially in her final two weeks. Thank you!
