Second annual “Battle for the Rock”

Thursday, September 8, 2022

Next week will feature the Columbus High School versus Big Timber High School football game and the second annual “Battle for the Rock” — a fun twist on the rivalry started last year with the help of the Sibanye-Stillwater mining company in which the winning team takes possession of a special trophy.

That trophy consists of a piece of ore from the JM reef that was specially selected by a mine geologist and chiseled down to 25 pounds then mounted to a base. Mine employees from both East Boulder in Sweet Grass County and the Nye site in Stillwater, took part in what promises to be a long-standing fun rivalry.

Columbus took possession of the trophy last year with its Homecoming win over the Herders.

The mine will also donate $1,000 to the winning town’s community foundation.
