The Columbus speech and drama team was back at it in Belfry last weekend.

The long winter break did not seem to have affected the team members much – competing against 16 other Class B-C teams, 11 of the 12 Cougars that attended the meet made it to finals.

The speech team took third place, led by senior Susan Carrel with a first place finish in spontaneous oral interpretation and by junior McKayla Valdez, who won the informative speaking category.

Sophomore Keelie O’Reilly finished second in humorous oral interpretation, and a pair of Cougars finished third in their events – senior Adrian Cook in memorized public address and senior Braiden Ranstrom in original oratory.

Three drama teams from Columbus also competed well in Belfry.

The dramatic duo of senior Ashton Zwetzig and sophomore Lana Summers finished second, and sophomores Leslie Richardson and Shelby Knudsen finished fourth as a classical theater pair.

Another classical theater group – freshmen Zoe Mentzer and Caydence Martin – finished sixth.

The Cougar speech and drama team will wrap up its regular season in Huntley this weekend. Then it’s off to Missoula to compete in the divisional meet the following weekend.
