Hazel Viig

Hazel Elizabeth Viig, 83, passed away Wednesday, May 23, 2018, in Columbus. Hazel was born to Lillian and Hampton Suttles on June 29, 1934, in Plantersville, Ala.,

at the family home. In 1941, after her dad was killed, she moved with her mother and little sister to Columbus and lived on her great-grandfather’s farm. She attended the Lone Tree Schoolhouse until 3rd grade, when they moved into town so her mom could work and raise her two little girls.

In 1956, she married Alfred Viig. They moved to Maple Valley, Wash. Two of their children, Teresa and Allen, were born there. They moved back to Columbus to live on the family farm. Hazel and Al raised their four children —Teresa, Allen, Deb and Karen —on Whitebird Creek.

Alfred preceded her in death in 2014.

She is survived by her children Teresa (Lee) Hauge of Red Lodge, Deb Viig of Cody, Karen Brewer and Allen Viig of Columbus; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; stepson Ed (Paulette) Viig and family; and her sister Olive Benningfield (Eldon) of Yakima, Wash.

She enjoyed working in her rose bed. She loved word search puzzles, reading, going for drives with her son in recent years and spending time with her grandson, Brandon. She was very proud of her kids and grandkids and never missed a birthday.

Memorial services will be held June 1 at 11 a.m. at Columbus Congregational Church with a light lunch following. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Columbus Community Congregational Church or Columbus Senior Citizen Center.
