Zelma Marie Fields

Zelma Marie Thompson Fields, 94, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Sept. 7, 2019, at Meadowlark Assisted Living in Columbus, Mont.

Our beloved matriarch has gone to join her husband, Robert Lowell Fields,” for a new chapter in the sky.

Zel was born on June 11, 1925, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Martha Fern McManus and Herman Thompson. Zel was the eldest of three children who included her brother, James Thompson, and half-sister, Lynn Holder.  From a young age she became the caretaker for her siblings, while her mother single-handedly opened restaurants in the late 30s and 40s.

Zel married her true love, Lowell, in 1946 in Omaha Neb. In 1954, they moved to Columbus, Mont., where they raised their only child, Chere Sue’.  Grandma worked at the Yellowstone Bank for over 25 years and shared many years of friendship and fellowship with people in the community. She loved golfing, knitting (especially baby blankets for newborns), and sweet treats!

Zel is survived by her daughter, Chere’ Sue Allan of Billings, Mont.; her three grandchildren, Carson Burrington (Boston), Brittne Burrington (Billings) and Teal Allan (Seattle) as well as her great-granddaughter, Briannah Chapman (Billings).

We would like to say a special thank you to the team at Meadowlark Assisted Living for the 11 years of top-notch living conditions as well as treating her like part of the family.  We are forever grateful for the quality of living you helped provide for her.

One of Zel’s favorite fundraisers, Kruizin’ for Seniors, would be a beautiful way to honor our dear Zelma and continue her legacy should you like to donate.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2019 at Meadowlark Assisted Living in Columbus, Mont., from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
